Kuan Yin Speaks. Your heart as train conductor

"Good morning! This is Kuan Yin.

..

Trains change track using a machine that switches the direction of the rails. The switch or point machine moves blades of rail into place that change the direction of the train wheels. Deciding which track a train should use is the job of the train controller, though it is usually handled automatically by computer.

There is a teaching from Buddhism that says,

"The heart houses the mind and soul."

Everything is heart, and everything passes through the heart, including the non-stop flood of mortal thought.

This flow of illusion world thinking is without bottom and without end, you'll never stop it. As long as there is as world mind that generates thought, you are subject to it. The idea of stopping thought is erroneous, because it will simply dam up and cause greater damage than it already does. The teacher, Master Sha, tells us that trying to stop thoughts in your mind can actually cause mental problems.

You can, however, redirect thought.

...

Let's use the analogy of a train on the tracks.

The ideal ground for this practice is a mind that is quiet to start with, the mind of a being who takes time to simply observe their environment, and not react with overwrought emotions and words. This exercise can assist with achieving a good meditation practice, observing the breath and redirecting intruding thought.

..

In this observing state, start to watch the train of your thoughts. When a train gets going, especially one with lots of cars, that momentum is difficult to stop. Try this. Place your awareness in your heart. When you see that your train of thought is chugging along powerfully, with one car-thought after another, often going off on other disassociated tracks, hit the switch that sends the train off to the left or right, off a cliff. What lies at the bottom of that cliff can symbolize anything you want, a fiery furnace, a great and beautiful light, a bottomless sea of blue-green water. Allow the train to continue to run, but away from you, until it dissipates from your lack of attention.

..

See that it is not important, and that it has no power that you do not allow it to have. Rest happily in the stillness that follows, alert for the next train. Repeat, and repeat, until it becomes so habitual a behavior that it automatically happens whenever a thought train appears.

...

The thought train is one that is always in the future or the past, it really is not possible for a thought to exist in present moment awareness. Truly being in present moment awareness, alive, alert, awake, is a place of magic and infinite potentiality. It is Aladdin's cave, hiding in plain sight. It is always there, pristine, filled with Heaven's color and light. Waiting for you.

The train is noise, dirt, nonsense. You don't need it.

That is all. I love you."
